OUR NEXT DISCUSSION GROUP MEETING WILL BE ON MONDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 5th period. WE WILL MEET IN THE COURTYARD BETWEEN BARTRAM HALL AND THE OLD MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY.

NOVEMBER 20th

We will have a discussion about play in animals. How do we explain apparent play behavior in other animals? How could we test hypotheses about play?
What patterns of apparent play do we see in other animals? Do we see play in plants?

NOVEMBER 6th

On this date, we will discuss articles related to the human genome project.
The first article is the report of the mapping of human chromosome 21
(Nature 405, 311 - 319 (2000)).

The second (Nature 408, p. 17 (2000)) and third articles (Nature 402, 445 (1999)) consider the ethical issues related to collaboration and ownership of the human genome.

These are all from the journal Nature. You can get the password to gain access to the Nature articles at Marston Science Library.

Here is a link to Nature, http://web.uflib.ufl.edu/msl/nature.htm.
Follow this link and then you can find the articles for Monday.
Please let me know if you have any problems with this.

Vanishing before our eyes

Are you interested in participating in a biology discussion group?

Since our Friday class sessions are more of a review session than a discussion session, I thought that I

would offer a once-a-week hour-long discussion group to those of you who are interested.

The purpose of this group would be to discuss current issues in biology and how they

relate to the concepts we are learning in class. So, we might discuss genetic engineering or

genetics of disease, or the human genome project, for example. Then, as we move on to evolution and

ecology, the topics of our discussion would change. The format of the discussion would be very

informal.  We would all read an article before meeting and discuss it as a group. One person would be "in

charge" of picking the article and helping to facilitate the discussion. I think this could be a very cool

opportunity to take what you are learning and understand the applications to the "real world".

Please e-mail me if you are interested (Lsirot@zoo.ufl.edu).
