In a paper published in the Febuary 28th issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, GuangJun Zhang et. al show that the lamprey, long thought to have a non-collagenous skeleton, use the same Sox9-Collagen2 pathway as jawed vertebrates.
