Outreach

I direct an NSF-funded GK-12 program called SPICE (Science Partners in Inquiry-based Collaborative Education).  We pair graduate students with middle school teachers and train them to teach science in a way that will excite kids and turn them onto science.  We do so through inquiry-based lessons that empower kids to become scientists, themselves.  Science becomes exploratory rather than a collection of stale facts.  Equally important, SPICE improves communication and partnership skills of graduate students, who we hope will remain active in outreach activities for the rest of their careers.
