Introduction

Note (15 Feb 2009): I haven't touched this in many years (as the timestamps on these pages suggest), but apparently people are still coming here to look at things. That's great! You might also want to go take a look at The Septic's Companion: A British Slang Dictionary, a web page and (printed) dictionary of British slang by a Scotsman living in America [this is a blatant commercial plug (for which I received a free copy of the book) ...]

Introduction

This glossary was put together in 1992 and 1993 while I was living in Cambridge (I am a native United Statesian). I included words and phrases that I heard that seemed strikingly different from American usage, or that were funny. This dictionary makes no claim to completeness, or even to much correctness; one of the things I found out was that different people use language differently. Please feel free to send me e-mail if you enjoyed this list or have comments or suggestions, but I am not actively working on the list any more, so may not incorporate suggestions ...

Most of the words here represent different words, or different usages, from around the South of England, and some specific to Cambridge University, or Oxbridge, with a scattering of Northern slang.
